Did you know that 100 words make up ~half of all published text books??

The Unique Approach to Sight Words

Make the sight words pop!

Each sight word book includes the first 100 Fry Sight Words. We bold and color highlight each word exactly once.

Example: People love to dance

Have captivating images

My goal is to give you a tool to engage with your kids educationally, but in a way that feels like pure fun. My hope is that the eye-catching imagery and visual salience grabs their attention.

Focus on a few words per page

To take the pressure off reading every word all at once, we only show a few of the bolded / color highlight sight words for each page. Less pressure. More focus.

Flex that muscle

Even though each sight word is bolded and color-highlighted only one time, those same words are all over the books. An index of what pages each word is on, can help as your child continues to progress.

How to use the book to support learning

It's important to remember that kids don't know what they're looking at until you teach them. Once you engage with them, they pick it up so fast!

Your job is simple!

  • Read together at a relaxed pace

  • Point out the shapes of the letters, and use the amazing pictures as clues

  • You are the guide, and the book is your map.

The importance of sight words.

25 Words make up approximately one-third of all published text.

100 Words make up approximately half of all published text.

300 Words make up approximately two-thirds of all published text.

By learning to recognize these on sight, children will be able to understand most sentences much more easily and quickly.

Combining Sight Words & Early Reading

When children begin learning to read, sight words play a powerful role. These common words appear again and again in everyday text, and recognizing them quickly helps children read more smoothly and confidently. In fact, a small group of sight words makes up a large portion of what early readers encounter on the page.

When I started teaching my own kids to read, I knew sight words were essential, but traditional methods felt overwhelming. Memorizing lists, drilling flashcards, or using rigid programs didn’t hold their attention, and reading time quickly became frustrating. I wanted a way to introduce sight words that felt natural, engaging, and supportive of real learning.

That’s why Mavericks Tales Sight Word Adventures embed the first 100 Fry Sight Words directly into the story. Each word is bolded and color-highlighted exactly once to help it stand out visually without distraction. By focusing on only a few highlighted words per page, children can build recognition and confidence at their own pace, without pressure.

Those same sight words appear again throughout the book in regular text, creating natural repetition and reinforcement. An included index helps parents easily revisit words as their child progresses. The goal isn’t memorization. The goal is confidence, comprehension, and a strong foundation for reading.

A Note from the Author

Welcome, families and future readers. My name is Dane Granat. I am the author of The Mavericks, a lifelong reader, and most importantly a father of two. Before you begin this reading journey, I want to share why I created The Mavericks.

We both know when you turned to this page, what stood out? The bold, highlighted sight words! Am I right?! That is the power of this book! That is the power of sight words!

Like many parents, I wanted to help my kids learn to read and I knew sight words were a key to unlocking their reading skills. But, getting started felt overwhelming. Memorizing lists, using charts, or finding books that actually held their attention never quite worked.

Then it dawned on me, how about I create it! At its core, The Mavericks is an educational tool designed around sight-word recognition and early reading development. My hope is that the visual salience pulls them in and guides them towards confidence.

Thank you and I wish you and your aspiring reader all the success you rightfully deserve!

Happy Sighting! Dane Granat
